I’m always trying to connect with my kids. But, life is busy. Sometimes, you have to connect or play games in the car or while cooking dinner. But even if you’re limited by time, there are still fun ways to “play” with your kid that takes almost no supplies and minimal effort. The “would you rather” game – kid edition – is a great way to do that. Her are a few holiday-themed versions of Would You Rather to play with your child:

1. Would you rather have Christmas lights that change with your mood or dance to your favorite song?

This is a fun one to ask and elaborate on. Some followup questions might include what their favorite songs are, what colors the lights would be, or what mood would be displayed the most. I like this thought experiment for its inherit creativity and innocence.

2. Would you rather sleep in a gingerbread house or lay on a pillow of marshmallows?

Neither is an acceptalbe answer, in my opinion. Both of these options sound a bit sticky to me. But, it’s fun to imagine the possibilities. Also, are you gingerbread-sized or is the gingerbread house massive?

3. Would you rather receive a toy or a sweet treat for the holidays?

This might seem like a simple question, but it gets you thinking about the fun side of holiday gifts. Toys offer hours of imaginative play, whether it’s building blocks, dolls or action figures. They can spark your creativity and keep you entertained long after opening day. Plus, you get to pretend and make up stories, which feels pretty special during the festive season.

On the sweeter side, holiday treats like cookies, chocolates or candy bring instant happiness with every bite. Sweet treats are often tied to holiday traditions, like sharing with family or leaving some out for Santa. There’s something comforting about the smell and taste of these goodies that makes the holidays feel extra cozy and inviting.

If you’re the type who loves to play and invent new adventures, a toy might be your favorite. But if you enjoy little bursts of happiness and festive flavors, a sweet treat might be just the ticket. Either choice has its own kind of holiday magic.

4. Would you rather have a party with friends or a quiet evening with family?

Holiday parties with friends usually mean laughter, games and lots of excitement. But they might be overwhelming for little ones. In this “would you rather” scenario, prompt your child to describe his or her perfect evening. Would they rather invite all their friends to your house or spend more quality time with the ones you love most?

5. Would you rather open one big present or ten small presents on Christmas morning?

This one will help you get to know your child a bit more. The answer might be obvious if there is one particular toy they have been wanting. On the other hand, maybe quantity matters more than quality. But this fun, theoretical question might just help you narrow down your shopping list.

6. Would you rather be one of Santa’s elves or one of his reindeer?

This fun, thought-provoking question could lead to a fun discussion about a theoretical look behind-the-scenes of Santa’s workshop. Do the elves get better snacks than the reindeer? Who works harder? Do you think the reindeer get to relax up until Christmas Eve? Hearing your child’s answers might just surprise you!

7. Would you rather write a letter to Santa or make a holiday craft?

The fun part about this question is that you can make a plan to do the one they pick! Writing a letter to Santa is a super easy tradition that taps into the magic of holiday wishes. Of course, the letter can be a creative outlet too and serve as a keepsake later.

On the other hand, making a holiday craft is a hands-on way to get festive with colors and glue. But if you’re short on time, I recommend skipping the glitter.
