Modern technology is great. Let’s take a look at baby monitors, for example. Once upon a time, parents had to simply listen for their children. When I was a baby myself, my parents had audio-only monitors.
And today, we are blessed with monitors that have full visuals, white noise, songs and two-way audio.
But are all of those features necessary? Or good?
For example, the other day I accidentally hit a music button on my toddler’s Motorola monitor camera as she was going down for a nap and it scared her. In fact, it took a little convincing to get her to go back to sleep.
And it seems like she’s not alone. A toddler’s confusion about this technology was recently highlighted in a viral video posted to Instagram. In the video, a toddler is jumping on the bed when dad comes over the monitor speaker to intervene.
The toddler’s reaction is priceless
The toddler quickly stops jumping on the bed and then sweetly asks, “What is your name?”
The dad immediately breaks down form a stern tone to a softer tone and laughs, “It’s daddy, you silly goose.”
“Are you a guy?”
“It’s daddy buddy,” the dad says, still laughing, and asks him to remember how they were watching the screen together previously. The litle boy responds that he was watching with his “other daddy.”
It’s a moment that definitely reminds us how toddlers can go from being a little nuts and jumping on the bed to being the most adorable creatures on the planet. The caption reads, “In therapy years later: I grew up with two daddies, one was a spirit.”
The commenters shared their own stories
At the time of this post, the video has gotten nearly 165,000 views. Many of the commenters shared their own stories:
“I spoke to my son through the baby monitor saying, ‘It’s sleep time now.’ He said ‘Okay wall'” posted one parent.
“I used to do this to my son and he would get so terrified we had to take the cameras out of his room altogether,” said another.
Another commenter said they worked at a child care center where they were not allowed to use such technology. So it begs the question, should we be avoiding these types of monitors for our young children? Is it possible that it does more harm than good?
I don’t think this particular little boy seemed too bothered. In fact, it’s impressive (and adorable) how quickly he seemed to accept his “new” daddy. But, personally, I don’t think I’ll be using the feature again any time soon on my own toddler.
And just a note … you are interested in an audio-only monitor, they do still exist.
Have you ever talked to your toddler through the monitor? What was the result? Let me know in the comments below.
