Raising a toddler can be such a fun and chaotic phase of parenthood. As a two under two parent, I feel we have reached the pinnacle of adorableness … and chaos. The good news? I’ve discovered that asking my toddler funny and simple questions can be a great way to keep her engaged and busy, at least for a little while. Also, learning how to ask questions she understands shows her that she is understood and you want to be in her world.
So with that in mind, here are a few conversation starters you can have with your toddler:
1. Can you show me how to skip?
This question taps into your toddler’s natural desire to share and show off their newfound skills. It’s an invitation to slow down and enter their world. This one is a good one to use at home or when playing outside. It’s even better if skip along with them. It’s almost impossible to be in a bad mood when you’re skipping with your toddler.
2. Where did your socks go?
Asking toddlers where their socks vanish turns a mundane household mystery into a playful, detective-style question. You can have fun with eachother by looking in silly places. For example, look under your own shirt or in your toddler’s water cup.
Toddlers love it when you’re silly and goofy with them. Bonus points if you actually end up finding some misplaced socks.
3. Where is your tickle spot?
This one may work for a select audience, but my little one definitely has a distint tickle spot and giggles even if I ask where it is. I tease her by pointing to other spots and getting it wrong first. It’s a hilarious, fun game that we like to play.
4. Where do you think [family member] is?
The other day, my toddler just woke up on the wrong side of her crib. Nothing was making her happy. But I asked wher her sister was. I asked where her daddy was. Spoiler alert: They were still sleeping. (Lucky them). But, asking her a simple quesiton seemed to pull her out of her “funk”.
5. Did your [stuffed animal] go poo poo?
I like this one for toddlers who are in the midst of potty training or about to begin. It’s a good way to introduce the concept of going poo poo, and also the fact of life that everybody does, in fact, go poo poo.
My toddler will now play along that one of her stuffies has pooped and request a wipe and a diaper to help get them cleaned up. Eventually, you can start having the stuffie use the potty as well. Just make sure they don’t fall in the potty.
6. Are you sleeping?
I like to use this one with my toddler as I’m getting her out of the car. I’ll open the door and pretend like I’m talking to someone else and say, “Shhhh, she’s sleeping!” My little one will start smiling and closing her eyes to play along. There’s almost nothing cuter than seeing a toddler grinning while pretending to be asleep.
7. What does [this animal] say?
Animal sounds were some of the first “words” my toddler would say. So, whenever we get a little time together – which can also be a great driving activity – we go through some animal noises. You can also have some fun with the ones that are less obvious, like a rabbit.
8. Does a pig say meow?
This is similar to the above question, but with a bit of added silliness. Kids love it when you ask questions that they know the answer to. It makes them feel smart, and they’re usually in on the joke. This question might be best for older toddlers.
9. Does this shoe go on my head?
I find that a toddler loves it when you “play the boob” a little, so to speak. Acting silly and getting things “wrong” can show your toddler that you’re relatable, silly, and playful. It can also teach them a sense of humor in the process.
10. How does [family member] sneeze?
Fake sneezing is the low hanging fruit of comedy in our house. Both my baby and toddler will giggle when we have a fake sneezing session. The more over the top, the better. Asking your little one to not only fake sneeze – but intimidate someone else’s sneeze – could be a hilarious activity.
11. Can you show me your slow feet?
I like to use this one as a game but also as a practical life skill. For example, anytime the floor is wet I tell her to use “slow feet”, which does slow her down and decrease the chances that she will fall. Practicing this skill just for fun can also be a cute yet simple way to practice gross motor skills and bond with your little one.
