It’s that time of year again. It’s officially the holiday season, which brings lots of joy, music, laughter … and maybe stress … for moms everywhere. So while we’re juggling how to make the holidays fun and memorable for our little ones, we are also trying to keep up with the daily grind and never-ending laundry pile. And of course, don’t forget the holiday shopping.

So moms, do you yourself a favor and be selective about the holiday toys this year. I decided to ask one of my go-to mom groups what they thought were their most annoying toys. The responses are anonymous, but also quite funny and relatable. So here are the top annoying toys, according to a group of two under two moms. I’ve also included a few alternatives on what you can get instead.

1. Little People moving trucks

While I don’t personally agree with this one, (I actually quite like the Little People collection from Fisher Price), one mom said that she can’t stand the moving trucks specifically. “I think the zoo train is the worst, though,” the mom of two said. “You can’t even move it without the sound going off.”

The Little People toys have buttons and areas on the toy that can be pressed to trigger music and sounds. For some moms, they may also trigger something else as well!

For what it’s worth, my household has the Taco Truck, and I do not find it annoying.

2. Ball pits

I can get on board with this one a bit more. Ball pits, even though the kids love them, can get out of control quickly. While the kids are having a good time, they’re also throwing balls everywhere. Naturally, those balls will end up in just about every room of the house.

“Multiple times a day, I am crawling around like a hungry hippo putting the balls back in the ball pit,” said one mom.

Another in the group agreed. “I will not have a ball pit. I’d rather take them to a local play center and they can jump there and have fun without me needing to pick up a hundred balls a day.”

One personal gripe I have about this one? It’s surprisingly expensive to fill a ball pit. I’ve easily spent about $50 on balls and have still not entirely filled ours up.

3. The Crab

Ah, yes the viral crab toy. It’s great for encouraging young crawlers. But it’s also incredibly loud.

“My mom found it and thought it was hilarious. Now all noisy toys go to nanny’s!” said one mom of two.

The famous crab, at least my version, only had an on and off switch. There’s no volume button. And there’s no auto shut off. Just continuous, loud music. It was quite effective at getting my little crawler to chase after it though.

If you’re interested in the crab, there are versions now that have a mute button. The Baby Einstein octopus is another alternative here that may not be as loud or annoying.

4. Anything with ‘moving parts’

Naturally, moms like their toys to occupy their children’s time. Not occupy ours. So when a toy has a million pieces, the parents find themselves picking up the pieces at the end of the day, trying to find lost pieces, or worse, fixing whatever may get broken during playtime.

“[My kid] got Hot Wheels for his birthday, and the ramp moves the cars up to the top and sends them back down. But cars get stuck so I have to get up every three minutes to sort it out!”

That may be one mom’s experience. However, just as a note, this Hot Wheels toy has an impressive 4.8-star rating. I guess it works for some!

5. Anything with ‘a million pieces’

Last but not lease, we have the toys that have too many pieces. Toy manufacturers love to advertise how many pieces come with a toy set. But for some moms, fewer pieces is definitely better.

Now, this particular mom had a bone to pick with Duplo Legos. I personally LOVE Legos and think they are great for kids. But I definitely understand the complaint.

“I actually don’t mind the ones that are loud but OMG the things with a million pieces! Duplo is by far the worst, but [my kids] love it, so I have to leave it out.”

There are Duplo Lego sets that are smaller, like this train set, which may be better for little learners that won’t have so many pieces.
