Halloween can be a tricky time for young children. In my household, my oldest child just turned two, which means she’s becoming much more aware of the world around her. Things that used to not startle her much seem to now frighten her more. For example, a recent bad thunderstorm resulted in a delayed bedtime for the evening. Scenes from Pixar movies might result in a bad dream.
Because of this, I’ve made the effort to avoid anything that could potentially seem scary in an effort to make her feel happy and safe. As you can imagine, this becomes more challenging during spooky season. But one mom in Tennessee decided that she wasn’t afraid to startle her child with a little Halloween “fun”.
The now-viral baby’s jump scare
The video shared by Tennessee mom Laken Lewis on TikTok shows a 10-month-old baby in a shopping cart in a Dollar General. When the baby looks away, mom puts on a “Scream” mask to surprise her infant. The mom makes sure the camera is rolling and surprises her baby with the mask.
Not surprisingly, the baby is extremely startled and immediately starts screaming and crying. The video then cuts abruptly.
The caption says, “In my defense I didn’t know he would react like this,” and the video has received 4.2 million views.
The reaction from viewers
Many of the top comments were simply of gifs and memes. To my surprise, a lot of the comments were mixed, with some saying things like, “I mean, how else was he going to react?” and others implying the baby might need therapy later in life.
One commenter said, “Some of y’all are NOT parents or been around other kids and it shows. My youngest laughs at masks and scary things. My oldest? Cries. Every child is different … he’ll be fine.”
Another said, “We tried that with our baby and she laughed.”
The takeaway
I agree with the sentiment that every child is different. But a prank like this? You may be able to pull that off with an infant. Or maybe an older toddler. But a ten-month-old? They’re just starting to “come online” and notice their surroundings.
Many sources say that between 6 and 18 months is when your baby’s cognition and awareness can trigger fears and insecurities. A baby can be afraid of household items like a vacuum or a dog. And it’s generally recommended to avoid triggers where you can.
And if you do want to try some pranks on your child, I’d wait until they get a little older and you have a good handle on their temperament. But I’m not here to mom shame. Since the video cut off, I’m going to hope that the little guy received lots of comfort and cuddles after that surprise.
And if you’re looking for some seasonal fun for your little one, perhaps just stick with a few Halloween crafts for now.
